Sunday night’s 93rd Academy Awards has come to an end and people were quick to voice their discontent over the night’s ending on social media.
While many expected late Chadwick Boseman to posthumously win the Best Actor award for his acting in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Anthony Hopkins managed to turn the tides and get the prestigious award for his performance in The Father.
With the announcement coming out at the end of the night, many expected that 43-year-old Boseman, who died of cancer back in August, would win the award as part of a grand ending to the event.
In spite of the expectations, however, the award went to Hopkins who became the oldest person ever to receive an Oscar for acting.
Further enraging Boseman’s fans was the fact that Hopkins wasn’t present at the Academy Awards and didn’t deliver an acceptance speech.
Following the Oscars, disappointed netizens were quick to take to social media to blast the decision and the “worst TV ending since Game of Thrones.”
“Knowing that Chadwick Boseman will NEVER win an Oscars is legit heartbreaking when tonight he absolutely deserved to win. That’s why they saved his category for last,” someone wrote.
“We got duped. Everyone and their dog thought Chadwick was going to win Best Actor to end the show on a high note so that’s why we assumed that category was put last,” another one said.
One person wrote: “Chadwick Boseman didn’t win the award for the best actor in a leading role even though he gave one of the best performances last year.”
Another angry Boseman fan added: “Are you serious #Oscars? You had one thing to do this year, which was to honor Chadwick Boseman with Best Actor. The only sure thing this year, and you gave his Best Actor trophy to Anthony Hopkins for a movie NO ONE saw and Hopkins didn’t even show up?!”
