A chained dog that was about to be killed for meat reached out to a stranger while waiting for his end outside a butchery.
The heartbreaking moment took place in Jilin Province, China, where a passerby spotted a sad-looking American Eskimo Dog waiting for its turn to be butchered for meat.
Once the stranger approached the pooch, the animal reached out with its paw as if it was asking for help.
Fortunately, the dog was rescued and later adopted by a local animal lover who urged the authorities to come up with stricter animal protection laws.
Since the dog’s rescue, the new owner also shared a picture of the transformed pooch on social media and revealed that the dog’s new name is Yuan Yuan. As seen in Yuan’s recent photos, the animal is now well-groomed whereas its scared look got replaced by a big smile.
“See how scared it was while waiting to be butchered at the dog meat store, and how hopeful it looked [when approached by a stranger],” the dog’s new owner wrote in her Douyin post.
As Wendy Higgins of the Humane Society International explained after Yuan’s story went viral, the pooch was most likely someone’s pet “likely stolen for the meat trade.”
“The dog in the video responded to human kindness by offering a paw, a sure sign that this dog was almost certainly a former pet, likely stolen for the meat trade,” Higgins told MailOnline.
According to the animal rights activist, the only way to protect dogs from ending up as the victims of the meat industry is to implement robust laws in the country.
