Though most people believe that chainsaws were invented for cutting down trees, this is far from the truth. Chainsaws, in fact, were invented to help doctors deliver babies during difficult childbirths.

In the 18th century, some two hundred years before C-sections became common around the world, giving birth was much more dangerous and painful than it is today due to a lack of modern surgical tools and anesthesia.

Since C-section was not practiced by many, doctors struggled to deliver babies who came out feet-first and babies who were stuck in the birth canal. To solve this problem, they would often have to cut the pelvic bone to widen the pelvic area and deliver the baby.

Because cutting into bones with knives wasn’t an easy thing to do, two Scottish surgeons, James Jeffray and John Aitken, invented the chainsaw which has since then, for decades, helped doctors cut through the pelvic bone during difficult deliveries.

As horrific as this may sound, the invention probably saved many lives in its early stages as cutting through the bone with a chainsaw was much easier and faster than doing so with a knife.
