Brooke Skylar Richardson was 18 years old when she gave birth to her baby and buried her in their backyard.
Now 20, she is on trial for allegedly murdering her child in 2017.
Skylar didn’t tell anyone that she was pregnant, even the child’s father who she had a short relationship with.
She said that the baby was stillborn and she gave birth in the middle of the night inside the bathroom while her parents were sleeping.
But prosecutors said she killed the baby before setting her on fire to conceal that she had given birth.
In July, she was arrested after telling a gynecologist that she’d had a baby and buried her in their backyard.
After the child’s remains were found, a pathologist claimed that her bones had been burned as they were darker.
During the two-hour interview, Skylar said the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck. Then she felt she might’ve accidentally killed the child by ‘squeezing’ her too hard.
“I think I might have killed her,” she expressed. “I didn’t think she was breathing…I (inaudible).. squeezed her too hard. I didn’t think I was going to kill her. I didn’t kill her on purpose. I loved her.”
When asked if the baby had made a sound, she said: “Maybe a little noise, a gurgle, but I didn’t know if maybe it was something else… She might’ve moved but I didn’t look right away, I was in shock.”
One of the detectives then said about the fire: “We know what happened you just have to say it… we know there was something with fire.”
The other one said: “Tell us about the fire.”
“What fire?” She replied. Skylar said she only tried to burn the body but stopped because she realized it was wrong.
Her parents then entered the room, embraced her, and asked what exactly happened. She replied: “I tried to cremate the baby just a little.”
Shocked, her father said: “You tried to cremate the baby!?…You delivered a live baby is what you’re saying?”
His daughter replied: “Yeah, I… I wasn’t sure.”
The father then told her: “You absolutely have to go. You have to go to jail now.”
It was ruled that the child’s death was a homicide.
