Cher, public celebrity, had been labeled and mocked as a ‘white savior’ for telling her platform that she could have saved George Floyd if she had been part of the crime scene.
Remarks on the case involving Derek Chauvin, cop who allegedly killed Floyd last May through the kneeling of Floyd’s neck, has been on the rise and recently went viral.
Cher tweets: “Was Talking With Mom & She Said ‘I Watched Trial Of Policeman Who Killed George Floyd,& Cried’. I said ‘Mom,I Know This Is Gonna Sound CRAZY, But.. I Kept Thinking…..Maybe If I’d Been There,…I Could’ve Helped,”
The 74 year old had been slammed for her statement, critics are accusing her for being a ‘white savior’ and trying to make her realize how the tweet made her sound tone deaf.
The tweet is seen as an insult to those who have taken a stand at the scene, disregarding the trauma that the individuals have gone through since there were attempts of trying to help Floyd in the first place.
A twitter user wrote in response, “I love my Cher but oof. that was a little too white savior complex for me. I know she means well and probably doesn’t understand but… honey… no,”
Another wrote that “This is significantly underplaying what witnesses who testified TRIED to do to stop his death. There have been MULTIPLE testimonies of everyone from a firefighter to an MMA fighter to a senior man who attempted to diffuse the situation. Singing songs doesn’t erase racism, Cher,”
Some users tried to empathize with Cher, giving responses that acknowledges both her good intent on the tweet and acknowledgment that she is unable to do anything now that time has passed.
A Twitter user tweets, “Y’all need to stop. Cher is an ally. She feels what decent people feel, I wish I could’ve saved #GeorgeFloyd. Can we not blur the line in the sand, please?”
Another adds in response, “I think she is trying to express sadness but it came off the wrong way,”
Cher has not yet responded to the fire that had been created, and her tweet has not been deleted.
