Behavioral experts and researchers have suggested that leaving your children in the hands of their grandparents could be bad not only for the kids’ behavior but also for their health.
While the majority of young ones love nothing more than going on a vacation to their grandparents, leaving kids with the elderly could actually be harmful to their development according to a new study.
In their study, the researchers from Sorbonne University studied nearly 1,500 children and their development from the time of birth to eight years old.
As they concluded, children who spend more time in nursery and less time with grandparents are less likely to have behavioral issues and suffer from poor social skills than their peers.
In addition, children who were being taken care of by their grandparents were more likely to be obese and have emotional problems.
In another research, the University of Glasgow concluded that children are more prone to overeating and lacking exercise when in care of grandparents which can lead to weight gain and behavioral issues.
“Exposure to smoking and regularly treating children increases cancer risks as children grow into adulthood, it is also clear from the evidence that these risks are unintentional,” Dr. Stephanie Chambers of the Social and Public Health Sciences Unit explained.
“Currently grandparents are not the focus of public health messaging targeted at parents and in light of the evidence from this study, perhaps this is something that needs to change given the prominent role grandparents play in the lives of children.”
