Two young children were found living with the lifeless bodies of their parents days after they died.
A one-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl were found by worried relatives who could not reach their parents, Viktoria and Alexander Yakunin.
The couple reportedly failed to attend a family gathering and when their concerned relatives called, it was their daughter who answered the call.
The five-year-old said that their mother and father were ‘sleeping’ for a long time, adding that their skin had ‘turned all black.’
The young girl was taking care of her little brother at their apartment in Leningrad Oblast, Russia.
Their aunt, Natalia Bakulina, rushed to their apartment and found the couple’s body in bed.
“I ran in and saw everything. I fell down and screamed,” Ms. Bakulina said.
Ms. Bakulina called emergency services and police then took the children out of the apartment.
According to news outlet 78.ur, Mr. Yakunin had received a jar of pickles from his grandmother. Botulinum toxin is the suspected cause of death.
The toxin from the pickles causes paralysis and death through respiratory failure.
The children are now being cared for by their grandfather.
One saddened person commented: “Oh that’s awful. Those poor children. Thank goodness the little girl was mature enough to look after them. I hope they forget the memory of it all.”
Another wrote: “How can pickles get contaminated? Bad preparation? Scary and very Sad for the children.”
A third added: “What a tragedy. Those poor children. RIP Mr. and Mrs Yakunin. Most sincere and deepest condolences to friends, relatives and especially the children.”
