The infamous children’s nurse who has long been suspected of murdering eight babies has finally appeared in court.
31-year-old Lucy Letby from Hereford, England, appeared in Manchester Crown Court to state her name and confirm that she’s able to undergo the proceedings after being charged with killing eight babies and conspiring to murder ten more.
The young nurse was first arrested back in 2018, and rearrested in 2019, after becoming a prime suspect in the police investigation that started in 2017 after a surge of deaths at the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital. She was arrested for the third time in late 2020 following years of investigation.
The 31-year-old has since been accused of murdering five baby boys and three baby girls she was tasked with taking care of. The nurse was also charged with attempted murder of ten other infants between March 2015 and July 2016.
As an investigation showed, a series of babies at the hospital were strangely impossible to resuscitate after dying of organ failure shorty after their birth.
Now, during her Monday court hearing, Letby appeared at the court via videolink to confirm her name. She has yet to enter a plea and is set to appear in court again on May 17.
According to the reports, the suspect remains in custody whereas her trial is set to kick off on January 11, 2022. The date, however, is only provisional and the start of the trial could be delayed.
“A dedicated team of detectives have been working extremely hard on this highly complex and very sensitive case doing everything they can as quickly as they can to identify what has led to these baby deaths and collapses,” Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hughes previously said.
“This is an extremely difficult time for all the families and it is important to remember that, at the heart of this, there are a number of bereaved families seeking answers as to what happened to their children.”
