Almost 100,000 Children Tested Positive For Coronavirus In Past Two Weeks As Students Return To School And Universities


97,000 children have tested positive for coronavirus in the last two weeks as schools and universities in some states reopen amid the pandemic.

There are over five million cases of coronavirus in the country with more than 162,000 fatalities. Out of those who tested positive for Covid-19, at least 338,000 were children.

Increased testing of children could be the key to determining their role in transmitting the virus, said Dr. Tina Hartert of Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Hartert, who is leading a study where DIY testing kits were sent to thousands of families, told CBS News: “The kits are shipped to the families, they are taught how to collect these samples, and then the samples are sent back by the families to a central repository.”

San Diego and Los Angeles, the two largest school districts in California, started the school year through online classes.

New York will welcome students again this fall, with Mayor Bill De Blasio assuring officials ‘have worked incessantly to get this right.’

De Blasio also said parents can register their students for remote learning, in-person instruction, or a hybrid system.

School districts and teachers are grappling with how to teach children while following social distancing guidelines and protecting them as well as themselves.

In Georgia, a picture of a hallway packed with students not wearing face masks was shared online as the school opened its gates.

Three staffers and six students then tested positive for Covid-19.

In New Orleans, students at Tulane University have received a warning that gatherings and parties of more than 15 people are not allowed.

Incoming Tulane senior Sanjali De Silva told ABC News: “I think that the majority of students are going to be really respectful and wear their masks, social distance, keep gatherings small.

“But I fear that there will be a distinct group of students that will decide not to do that. And it’ll be a big bummer.”
