Children will get a weekly supermarket voucher worth Euro 15 in substitute for the free meals while their schools are being shut due to coronavirus crisis.
The voucher will be offered to the students by a third-party that the government hired, and the parents will be able to redeem the vouchers in a majority of supermarkets.
Headteachers of the schools have also been told about this new scheme; however, it is not clear whether the school will have to provide them even during the Easter holidays. The Department of Education is yet to confirm all the finer details associated with this new scheme.
Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, addressed the nation last Thursday and promised parents and students that free school meals would continue.
The PM said that they are making provision in order to supply meals as well as vouchers for children who are eligible to obtain free meals. And he also said that some schools that are already doing it would be reimbursed by the government.
Schools have been closed since last Friday in an attempt to curb the spread of novel coronavirus. This has left the parents who are not financially strong to invest extra money to feed their children.
Approximately 1.3 million children across the country get school meals and their parent’s available benefits, including working tax credit or Universal Credit. You can check whether or not your kid is eligible for the voucher on the official UK government website.
Generally, when students have called sick, schools are not liable to provide them with free meals. However, considering the circumstances, the new scheme ensures that all eligible students get free meals and vouchers while their schools are being shut down.
