China has congratulated president-elect Joe Biden after major networks declared the Democrat the winner of the 2020 US elections.
In a statement provided by the country’s foreign ministry, the officials congratulated Biden and Harris as they insisted they “respect the choice of the American people.”
“We have been paying attention to the domestic and international community’s reaction to this US presidential election,” Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said.
“We respect the choice of the American people. We extend congratulations to Mr Biden and Ms Harris. We understand the results of the US election will be determined according to US laws and procedures.”
China’s recognition of Biden as the president-elect comes after several world leaders acknowledged him as the winner of the 2020 US elections.
“The Americans have chosen their President. Congratulations Joe Biden and Kamala Harris! We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let’s work together!” French President Emmanuel Macron said last Saturday.
“Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on winning the U.S. elections. Our sincere wishes for further development and prosperity for the American people. The UAE and USA are friends and allies with a strong historic partnership that we look forward to strengthening together,” the UAE ruler, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, wrote in a tweet.
Extending his congratulations was also Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who vowed “to work closely with the U.S. Administration” in the near future.
Congratulating Biden was also UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson who allegedly told Biden he hopes to strengthen the partnership between the two superpowers.
Congratulations have been flying in since last Saturday when major networks declared Biden the winner of elections after he passed the 270 electoral college votes threshold.
As Russia confirmed, however, they will not be extending congratulations until the elections are finalized and the “official results” are announced.
