China’s new emergency hospital to treat patients with coronavirus was constructed in only eight days.
The 269,000 square foot hospital with 1,000 beds will start receiving patients, according to state media. It is one of the two new hospitals that have been constructed in Wuhan, China.
The buildings’ design was based on a hospital in Beijing that was built in 2003 to help treat patients with SARS virus.
Engineers and professionals across China were brought in to help with the construction. The new hospitals will either be allowed to order supplies from factories or take from other hospitals.
According to state media, around 1,400 military doctors have been brought in to the new hospital, called ‘Fire God Mountain.’
Xinhua news agency also reported that many of the medics were involved in the fight against SARS, which took the lives of around 650 people in Hong Kong and China in 2002 and 2003.
During the SARS outbreak, construction workers also worked day and night to complete the hospital in 7 days.
The 1,000 bed-hospital is one of the makeshift medical facilities built to relieve other hospitals already full of patients in Wuhan, where the virus is first reported.
The killer virus is believed to have originated at a market in Wuhan and has took the lives of more than 300 people and infected around 14,000.
Only 1 of the more than 300 people who have passed away from coronavirus has been outside of China – in the Philippines.
Health authorities and governments are working to contain the virus and to treat patients who contracted the infection.
The other hospital, ‘Thunder God Mountain,’ will also start receiving patients.
