It’s getting heated and more controversial in the Sino-American relations as the United States swiftly moves to close down Chinese consulates either as an entirety in Houston, and targeting them for a possible fugitive hideout today for the one in San Francisco.
US prosecutors are saying that a biology researcher by the name of Tang Juan is being hidden in the said consulate. She is currently being hunted down for the allegation of her ties to the Chinese military and using deceits of sorts to enter within the States.
She was originally accused of one count of visa fraud on June 26, with the fact that she chose to withhold her somewhat shady ties with the People’s Army of China.point 139 | The prosecutors have apparently “discovered photographs of her in the uniform of the Civilian Cadre of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA)”.point 283 |
She has been employed at the Fourth Military Medical University (FMMU) also, making her background a little bit dubious and also a liability in terms of visa application and applicability.point 159 | During an interview with FBI agents on June 20, “Tang denied serving in the Chinese military, claimed she did not know the meaning of the insignia on her uniform, and that wearing a military uniform was required for attendance at FMMU because it was a military school,” attorneys wrote in a July 20 court filing.point 431 |
Subsequently, FBI agents allegedly “found further evidence of Tang’s PLA affiliation.point 89 | ” Tang has since evaded capture, and run off to the West Coast consulate “where the FBI assesses she has remained.point 197 | ”point 204 | 1
The agents propose that she is part of a “program conducted by the PLA — and specifically, FMMU or associated institutions — to send military scientists to the United States on false pretenses with false covers or false statements about their true employment.”
“There exists evidence in at least one of these cases of a military scientist copying or stealing information from American institutions at the direction of military superiors in China,” prosecutors said.point 186 | “There additionally exists evidence of the PRC government instructing these individuals to destroy evidence and in coordinating efforts regarding the departure of these individuals from the United States, particularly following the charges filed against Xin Wang in this district on June 7, 2020.point 446 |

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying called it “blatant political persecution.” “As far as I know, Wang Xin does research in the field of cardiovascular diseases. I don’t see how that could ever threaten US national interest or security,” she said.
