China Expelled Three Wall Street Journal Reporters Over A Headline

China has expelled three Wall Street Journal reporters working in mainland China over a headline that the newspaper published in its opinion pages.

The headline read: “China Is the Real Sick Man of Asia.”

The three Wall Street Journal reporters have been identified as Josh Chin, Wall Street Journal’s deputy bureau chief in Beijing, Chao Deng, and Philip Wen.

On Wednesday, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that China would expel three Wall Street Journal reporters working in mainland China over the headline.

Geng Shuang, the ministry spokesman, said that they do not welcome media that publish racist statements.

Geng Shuang said: “The Chinese people do not welcome media that publish racist statements and smear China with malicious attacks.”

Chinese officials have demanded a formal apology by The Wall Street Journal and asked them to recognize the seriousness of the error and punish those who are responsible for the racist headline.

However, China is being criticized for its decision to expel three Wall Street Journal reporters over the racist headline.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said a free press has a right to report facts and opinions and mature and responsible countries understand this.

The chief executive of Dow Jones and publisher of the paper, William Lewis, also showed his disappointment and said that their opinion pages regularly publish articles with opinions that people disagree.

He said: “It was not our intention to cause offense with the headline on the piece.”

“However, this has clearly caused upset and concern amongst the Chinese people, which we regret.”

While Matt Murray, the editor of The Journal, said they will support their journalists, their work and safety.

He said: “And we will continue in the coming days to push for this action to be reversed.”

The three reporters are ordered to leave the country within five days.
