The Sound of Music star Christopher Plummer has passed away in his home in Connecticut with his wife, Elaine Taylor, by his side.
According to New York Times, the award-winning actor who played Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music fell and hit his head. He died on Friday aged 91.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elaine, and his daughter Amanda.
Plummer’s co-star Julie Andrews said in a heartbreaking statement: “I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humor and fun we shared through the years.
“My heart and condolences go out to his lovely wife Elaine and his daughter Amanda.”
Plummer, who appeared in over 100 movies, was nominated for an Oscar for his role as author Leo Tolstoy in ‘The Last Station.’ He won two Emmy Awards for TV work, won Two Awards for his Broadway work, and performed for some of the top theater companies in the world.
His manager and longtime friend Lou Pitt also said in a statement: “Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words.
“He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”
Plummer became the oldest actor to receive a competitive Academy Award – supplanting George Burns and Jessica Tandy, who won theirs when they were 80.
His early movies included 1965’s Inside Daisy Clover with Robert and Natalie Wood, Triple Cross (1966), and The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) with Alec Guinness and Sophia Loren.
