A church in Los Angeles gave a generous gift to people in need during the holiday season.
The co-lead pastor at Christian Assembly Church, Tom Hughe, made an announcement in a video that the LA church would be paying off around $5.3 million worth of medical debt of families who need it the most.
He said: “Because of the generosity of Christian Assembly Church, we are able to give a Christmas gift to the people of Los Angeles, no strings attached.”
“We’ve worked with the nonprofit organization, RIP Medical Debt,” Hughes added. “We’ve learned that in these 28 neighborhoods, there is $5.3 million worth of outstanding medical debt that is owed by people who earn less than twice the federal poverty line.”
Each household will receive a letter telling them that their medical debt has already been paid off so they don’t have to worry about it.
The RIP Medical Debt and the church will also coordinate with the credit unions to repair the credit damage from medical debt of many people.
“As they recover from their illness, it will help them get back on their feet and avoid homelessness,” he said, adding that the act will help more than 5,000 households.
According to ABC7, the church collected around $50,000 in the past year. At first, the church doesn’t know what to do with the funds until they decided to use the money to pay people’s medical debts.
Blythe Hill, a church member, told ABC7 that he “would love to be a fly on the wall” when someone gets the letter informing that their medical debt has been wiped away.
“God is for you and we are excited to share this gift of generosity because of the generosity of our God,” Hughes added.
