Star athlete and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick has taken to Twitter to reject the Independence Day and call it a “celebration of white supremacy.
”
As the NFL player, who was with the San Francisco 49ers for six seasons, suggested in his tweet, people of color “have been dehumanized, brutalized, criminalized” and “look forward to liberation for all.”
“Black ppl have been dehumanized, brutalized, criminalized + terrorized by America for centuries, & are expected to join your commemoration of ‘independence’, while you enslaved our ancestors,” the athlete wrote on the 4th of July.
“We reject your celebration of white supremacy & look forward to liberation for all.”
Accompanying Kaepernick’s message was also James Earl Jones’ ‘What to the Slave Is the 4th of July?’ movie.
The activist’s tweet comes as millions of Americans have taken to the streets to protest police brutality and systemic racism in the country following the death of George Floyd.
Previously, in 2016, Kaepernick has sparked a revolutionary movement by refusing to stand, and taking a knee instead, as the National Anthem played during the match between San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers.
Following the controversial move, the athlete defended his decision to take a knee by saying: “I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed.”
In the wake of nationwide protests against systemic racism, plenty of protesters as well as sports teams were seen taking a knee as a symbol of their support for the BLM movement.
