Colin Kaepernick has reacted to the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict as he suggested it is a sign of a system built on white supremacy.
According to the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback turned activist, the jury’s decision to find the Kenosha shooter not guilty on all charges signifies that the system is corrupt and that it should be abolished.
In his public statement, Kaepernick went on to accuse the teenager, who was cleared of all charges, of being a white supremacist.
“We just witnessed a system built on white supremacy validate the terroristic acts of a white supremacist,” the civil rights activist wrote in his tweet.
“This only further validates the need to abolish our current system. White supremacy cannot be reformed.”
As it happens, the controversial athlete isn’t the only person in the industry to condemn the verdict and call for a change.
Drawing a reference to Julius Jones, an African-American man who was scheduled for execution this week before his sentence was commuted, quarterback Robert Griffin III wrote:
“Kyle Rittenhouse can kill without a sliver of doubt & walk free but Julius Jones is in jail for life without the chance for parole after being on death row for 20 years with all types of doubt in his case. What is Justice? God help us.”
Adding to the debate was also WNBA’s LA Sparks’ star Chiney Ogwumike who said: “Yet again, a necessary reminder that social justice is not a moment, it is a movement.”
Weighing in on the matter was also President Biden who admitted feeling “angry” and “concerned” by the Friday verdict.
Despite the outcome, however, the president went on to encourage people to refrain from resorting to violence and destruction in response.
“While the verdict in Kenosha will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned, myself included, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken,” Biden said.
“I urge everyone to express their views peacefully, consistent with the rule of law. Violence and destruction of property have no place in our democracy.”
