Students hailing from the University of Florida are now changing their minds about how they first felt about ‘Black Friday’.
According to local media reports, the students called out the name ‘Black Friday’ for being racist, as they felt it had strong racial connotations. Moreover, one even went about stating how it sounded offensive and hoped that someone would change the name to something more neutral.
But now, it appears that they may have changed their minds after learning about the history and background involved.
“No matter what people say, it’s not offensive. It has nothing to do with race,” explained one outspoken individual.
Students studying at the Gainesville campus were reportedly questioned by another student reporter about whether or not they would take part in the act of supporting the renaming of Black Friday, which is one day after Thanksgiving.
This is a day that is seen globally, which many tend to refer to as a day that’s commercially driven for consumerism. And that’s when the students’ responses were recorded on a video.
“Black Friday has been named in honor of the retailers that earn a profit and are going into the ‘black’ on the day that’s right after Thanksgiving, which is a year of losses and being in the red,” added another.
While most students felt strongly at first about how they would not like to participate in Black Friday, others were very keen about how they did not like or support the idea of capitalism and consumerism too.
At first, one survey conducted by the educational institution revealed how many favored the renaming so it was less discriminating and profiting against all the black community present.
But now, after learning the truth that very few people speak about, they’re adamant on how it’s just a day that celebrates shopping deals with plenty of bargains.
