A congressional candidate is facing felony charges after being arrested for allegedly shoplifting $2,300 worth of items at a Target store.
31-year-old Danielle Stella is a sworn supporter of President Donald Trump and a proud Republican who aims to take Ilhan Omar’s seat.
According to the reports, however, the candidate was arrested for theft not once but twice in the year 2019. In the first incident, Stella was accused of stealing 279 items worth a total of over $2,300 from Target in Minneapolis which she previously described as “the crime capital of our country.”
In her second arrest, the congressional candidate was accused of stealing $40 worth of groceries from a shop and attempting to hide them under her purse.
“I am not guilty of these crimes. In this country, I am innocent until proven guilty and that is the law,” the 31-year-old said in an interview with The Guardian.
“If I was guilty of crimes, I would never run for public office, putting myself in the public eye under a microscope to be attacked by all political sides.”
Speaking of the accusations, including stealing 279 items worth $2,300 while scanning only $50 worth of them, Danielle claimed she “remembers arriving at Target to purchase items but nothing else” because the visit allegedly left her with a PTSD.
In her defense, the woman added she typically “goes to Target with someone because of anxiety around people.”
The warrant for the congressional candidate’s arrest was issued in April, three months after the alleged theft, after she failed to appear at a court hearing.
Only weeks later, the woman was arrested again for the alleged stealing of a “bottle of tick spray for cats” which she hid “under her purse so that they could not be seen.”
