Republican Louisiana Congressman-elect Luke Letlow has passed away from coronavirus complications only days before being sworn in.
11 days after announcing that he had tested positive for coronavirus, the 41-year-old tragically passed away at Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport.
Before he was diagnosed with Covid-19, the father-of-two held campaign events and meet-and-greets where attendees did not wear face masks.
Andrew Bautsch confirmed Letlow’s death, saying: “The family appreciates the numerous prayers and support over the past days but asks for privacy during this difficult and unexpected time.
“A statement from the family along with funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.”
LSU Health Shreveport Chancellor G.E. said Letlow died from a heart attack after a procedure related to coronavirus.
“It’s devastating to our entire team. He had no underlying conditions. It was just COVID,” Ghali said.
Letlow was to fill the position being vacated by Republican Ralph Abraham, who served for three terms.
“There are no words for this loss. There was no one like Luke Letlow, and there was no one who loved this state and its people more. Luke was a part of our family, and we are so incredibly proud of the man he was. Luke leaves behind a legacy of service, a love for his community, and a love and understanding of people of every walk of life that will forever be unmatched,” Abraham said.
Gov. John Bel Edwards also urged people to pray for Letlow’s grieving family.
“COVID-19 has taken Congressman-elect Letlow from us far too soon. I am heartbroken that he will not be able to serve our people as a U.S. representative, but I am even more devastated for his loving family.”
U.S. House leaders also offered their condolences.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: “May it be a comfort to Luke’s wife Julia and their children Jeremiah and Jacqueline that so many mourn their loss and are praying for them at this sad time.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said: “Our hearts break tonight as we process the news of Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s passing.”
Letlow is survived by his wife, Julia Barnhill Letlow, and two young children.
