A pair of conjoined twins were born in India who were joined at the tummy and had a combined weight of just 7lbs.
Surgeons successfully separated the 3-day-old conjoined twin girls after a 5-hour operation at a hospital in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.
The twin girls’ parents were unsure about separating them but the surgeons managed to convince them.
Surgeons at S S Hospital in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India performed a 5-hour operation to separate the twin girls for free because the parents couldn’t pay.
After successfully separating the twin girls, the surgeons took a picture with the twin girls at the hospital.
Surgeons were happy they could separate the twin girls as it was a challenging operation for them. They said the twins were weak and they were scared if they would survive the long operation but they are happy they did.
Dr. Vaibhav Pandey, assistant professor of pediatric surgery, said: “It was one of the rarest operations our hospital does. I am very happy that both survived in spite of the long operation and the children being weak. It was a challenging task.”
The operation was performed by a team of five surgeons, ten doctors, and 15 nurses at S S Hospital in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.
The twin girls are doing well and are yet to be named.
According to Mayo Clinic, conjoined twins develop when an early embryo only partially separates to form two individuals. Although two fetuses will develop from this embryo, they will remain physically connected — most often at the chest, abdomen or pelvis. Conjoined twins may also share one or more internal organs.
40 to 60 percent of conjoined twins are stillborn while about 35 percent survive only one day.
