Formerly Conjoined Twins Thriving One Year After Being Separated


Formerly conjoined twins Prince and Love, from Ghatkopar, India, were born joint at the stomach.

The twin boys shared a liver, urinary bladder, intestines, and fused pelvic bones.

The twins’ parents Sheetal and Sagar Zalte found out they were expecting twins when Sheetal was eight months pregnant. After they were born, they found they were conjoined.

Sheetal told Barcroft: “When I saw them for the first time, I just fell in love with them instantly. I just accepted them wholeheartedly. Before the surgery, when they were not separated, some people were scared of them. I wasn’t. I never saw them in a strange way.”

In 2017, the twins were separated by surgeons at Wadia Children’s Hospital in Mumbai when they were 15-months old.

Shakuntala Prabhu, acting medical director of Wadia Children’s Hospital, told Barcroft TV: “Prince and Love were presented to us at around nine months of age. They were joined at the hips, and pelvis region.”

She said that it was a rare and challenging case for them. She said that it’s good to see them walk and play like other kids.

Now one year after the separation surgery, the twins are thriving.

The mother says she had never thought that doctors could separate them and it was an emotional moment to see them after the surgery.

She said: “Today my kids are like playing, hopping and dancing around. I never thought it would happen.”

The twins’ father said: “Our families didn’t come forward for the help. They didn’t even look at our children. After a year, our kids are doing well and are just like others.”

“It’s good to see our kids like others, who are just normal.”
