A convicted murderer who is serving a 15-year sentence at a maximum-security prison has spoken out and revealed her desire to become a model after winning a pageant.
Wishing to be judged for her “beauty and attitude” rather than her past crimes, Verônica Verone de Paiva took to the stage which is set up yearly to allow inmates at The Instituto Penal Talavera in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in a pageant.
While the maximum-security prison is known for housing female inmates who are locked up for committing severe crimes, the idea to run an annual pageant was well-accepted by all sides.
According to the prison authorities, the event encourages the inmates to be well-behaved, as only ten women with top behavior records are allowed to participate. As for the prisoners, on the other hand, the pageant gives them the opportunity to experience being “just a human” for a day.
“It was very good to be able to participate in the pageant, I didn’t expect to win first place but I am really happy, it really surprised me,” 25-year-old Verônica, who is jailed for killing her lover, expressed.
“I always tried to follow a modeling career, but my mother never agreed to that, but I intend to finish serving my sentence and get out of Brazil, to live in another country.”
Speaking of the unusual prison event to Barcroft TV, the coordinator, Ana Christina Faulhaber, said:
“Here at Talavera Bruce there was a newspaper called Só Isso that was organized by the inmates, and then, together with the Director of that time, they decided to make a beauty pageant to raise the self-esteem of the women, here of this penitentiary.
“For the pageant to happen, the prison unit itself has to behave, it has to have good discipline, and actually all the women who have been selected have good discipline to participate in the pageant. There were 50 women who signed up, and of these 50, ten were selected.”
Besides the inmates being able to participate in the fun activities, their families get to watch them do so.
“It is the first time that she got excited [for me] to come. She cries a lot, she gets very sad, she misses her family a lot,” Maria Jose de Santos, the mother of Mariana, said.
Mariana is a 24-year-old who was sentenced to 15 years in prison after getting involved in a phone-tapping fraud.
“I am already happy to be here. To be participating, it is a very nice opportunity and I have already won to be able to be here, to be able to participate and to see my family, that is the best of all,” the young woman said.
“I think it is an opportunity to show the world that we can have a second chance, that we are women, that we are human beings, that we deserve, and that we can also change, like everyone else.”
