When a cop pulled over a 22-year-old for driving a car with expired plates and learned the story of the driver, he decided to help the teen instead of issuing him a ticket.
Roger Gemoules, who is associated with Cahokia High School as a resource officer, was driving around Cahokia, Illinois, on April 17 when he happened to see a vehicle with expired number plates.
When he pulled over the car, he learned that driver Ka’Shawn Baldwin also had an expired license.
As Gemoules proceeded to issue a ticket to Baldwin, the teen opened up about why he was venturing out without proper licenses.
The 22-year-old said he was rushing to a job interview and had no other way to reach there in time.
Rather than setting him back, the police officer decided to help the youngster by driving him to the place Baldwin’s interview was scheduled.
The teen who was already working at McDonald’s was trying to get another job with FedEx. And thanks to the kind-hearted cop, he got the other gig as well!
When Francella Jackson, Junior Assistant to Mayor Curtis McCall, heard about the story, she knew she had to share this exemplary act of kindness with everyone out there.
Taking to her Facebook, Jackson wrote on April 18: “Cahokia police officer Roger Gemoules pulled a vehicle over yesterday that had expired plates.
“The occupant of the car also did not have a valid driver’s license, etc.
“He told Officer Gemoules that he had a job interview and didn’t have any way of getting there and that’s why he was driving illegally.
“Instead of issuing him a ticket, Officer Gemoules took him to his interview AND HE GOT THE JOB!
“On behalf of Mayor Curtis McCall Jr., I would like to thank Officer Gemoules for showing compassion and being a great example of how community oriented policing actually works.”
Mayor Curtis also praised the officer for his ‘excellent decision-making’.
In a statement released to WICS, the mayor said: “I am very proud of Officer [Gemoules] and the excellent decision-making and judgment he displayed in helping this young man.
“‘Community Policing’ is something we strive for in Cahokia, because it is not always about writing tickets, or sending someone to jail. It is about helping people when we can and building relationships.”
“Job well done Officer [Gemoules] and congrats to the young man for getting the job!”
