James Corden really likes his pranks and he can be quite elaborate about them, as the latest one featuring David Beckham shows.
Corden and Beckham are good friends and the talk show host found out that LA Galaxy was going to fete their star player with a statue outside the LA Galaxy stadium. What Corden did was lure Beckham to the loading dock of the stadium under the guise of a “final preview” of the statue before its unveiling to the public.
Corden and his crew worked two hard months to get everything right. While the real statue was taking shape, Beckham commented that he thought the chin was too big and the butt seemed to stick out too much. So Corden capitalized on these two details to create a parody of a statue that emphasized these unflattering features.
Fast forward to the day of the prank itself, there was a crowd of fans there who were really paid actors whose sole job was to annoy Beckham. Corden was orchestrating everything from behind the scenes and he had radio contact with all the actors.
One guy came in who got the name of Beckham’s team wrong. While congratulating the soccer phenom, he said, “Back in your Man City days, it kind of paralleled my career a lot,” to which Beckham, looking annoyed, interrupts by saying, “Man United days.”
But it doesn’t stop there. Speaking in the actor’s earpiece, Corden says, “Call him Dave, he hates being called Dave.”
An increasingly irritated Beckham manages to maintain his composure then just tells his companion that the other guy is an “interesting character” after the actor walks away.
Then comes a sample of the “highlight reel” that ex-teammate and LA Galaxy president Chris Klein announced. Of course, Corden put his own spin on it by also including some of Beckham’s lowlights that included missed free kicks and on-pitch fights.
A baffled Beckham just shakes his head at the video but handles it extremely well considering how awkward the situation is. Then comes the finale: the unveiling of the statue.
Comedian Max Jobrani impersonates the real sculptor Omri Amrany, who Beckham actually met a few months earlier, and Jobrani was so convincing that Beckham didn’t even realize he wasn’t talking to the real sculptor.
Then the statue itself is unveiled and Beckham can only be described as flabbergasted. He points out the chin and bum and says that they can’t put it out in public because it’s so embarrassing.
He goes on about how his wife and parents are coming and thankfully his kids are not coming because they would cry if they saw the statue.
Just when it looks like Beckham would walk out in frustration, Corden cues in the forklift which pushes the fake statue off the side of the loading dock to smash on the floor below.
Beckham actually seemed pleased at that and tells the forklift driver, “You probably did me a favor there.”
Then out comes Corden and that’s when Beckham realizes what’s up. Beckham is a good sport though and starts laughing out loud while mouthing some edited-out expletives. The two friends then embrace and all’s well again.
