Chinese scientists said the coronavirus bypassed the quarantine lockdown in Wuhan after mutating into a second strain.
Because the second strain showed only mild or no symptoms in the early stages, people infected others after they were released from the lockdown.
This comes as Europe became the epicenter of the outbreak, where more than 36,900 people have tested positive for coronavirus.
Knowing coronavirus can mutate may make it more difficult to treat or keep track of and it also increases the prospect patients who recovered could get the infection again.
It was on January 23 when authorities locked down Wuhan and its 11 million people before adding other cities, totaling 60 million people.
“Some common systemic symptoms of Covid-19 such as fever, fatigue, phlegm and muscle pain were more prominent in patients admitted before January 23, but more insidious in later patients,” said Zhang Zhan, a respiratory specialist.
Patients who tested positive for coronavirus after January 23 showed weaker symptoms, including 80 percent drop in muscle pain, 70 percent lower feeling of fatigue, and 50 percent lower fever.
Scientists also added that it is likely more mutations will follow.
WHO’s director general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said Europe has “more reported virus cases and deaths than the rest of the world combined, apart from China.”
He said in Geneva: “Europe has now become the epicentre of the pandemic. More cases are now being reported every day than were reported in China at the height of its epidemic.”
