Three members of the same family passed away from coronavirus, and another member who contracted the disease is now recovering at home.
33-year-old Marcela Lastre from North Carolina said she and her relatives are devastated after COVID-19 claimed the lives of her aunt and uncle, Esperanza and Mario Mayorga, both 72, and cousin 42-year-old Mario Mayorga Jr.
Her other cousin, 45-year-old Violeta Mayorga, had also contracted the infection, but she is now recovering at home.
It was in mid-March when Mario Mayorga Jr. developed mild symptoms of coronavirus. He was told to self-isolate and stay indoors.
“I had video chatted with him during that time,” Lastre told ABC News. “He looked like he had a very bad flu.”
But only a few days later, Mario Jr. started experiencing respiratory problems and was rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with coronavirus.
Mario Sr. grew more stressed as his son did not show any signs of improvement. “He locked himself in his room and kept wondering what if something bad happens to (his son)?” Lastre said. “He wasn’t eating.”
The father was rushed to a hospital over his stress and they were retested for coronavirus. They had to be admitted to the hospital as they all came back positive.
“It was about three to 5 days from one person showing symptoms to the next one,” Lastre shared. “We thought they would all show symptoms at the same time.”
Mario Sr. passed away on April 10, followed by Esperanza more than a week later. Mario Mayorga Jr. passed away on Sunday, Lastre shared.
“They were grateful to be here and become US citizens,” Lastre said. “This has been a family who has been together for so long and built so much together.”
