Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy in New York over the weekend.
In 2007, Rene Alexander Acosta was U.S. Attorney in Florida, and he negotiated a plea deal due to which Epstein served just 13 months out of the 18 months sentence.

The Democrats are asking for Acosta’s resignation due to his involvement in the controversial plea deal.
Donald Trump issues a statement on Tuesday to defend his Secretary of Labour, Rene Alexander Acosta in which he said that he felt very badly and praised Acosta for his excellent contribution in the Cabinet.
Trump went on to suggest that it was not entirely Acosta’s decision. He further added that he would look at Acosta’s role in the negotiation very carefully.
Talking about Epstein, Trump said that he knew him as everybody else knew him, a fixture in Palm Beach and that he had not spoken to him in fifteen years.
Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, said Acosta must step down as his ability to lead the Department of Labor is questionable.
He added that Acosta should be fired by Donald Trump if he refuses to resign. He demanded for the review of the case to be public and not kept in the dark.
White House Counselor, Kellyanne Conway, revealed that the President met Acosta when he applied for the job, two and a half years ago.
Acosta, who was questioned at the time of confirmation hearing about the plea deal, said that the President didn’t know him in 2007 and didn’t follow the case closely.
Conway criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for putting the focus on Acosta, a member of Trump administration, instead of Epstein, the perpetrator, when explicitly asked about Pelosi.
She also added that the focus should not be on what happened in Florida but on the charges in New York when she was asked about the status of the review.
