A couple from Georgia have been arrested and charged after their 5-year-old daughter died weighing only 3 kilos.
Porscha Mickens, 29, and Jerrail Mickens, 31, were arrested at their home and charged both with first-degree cruelty to children and felony murder.
Investigation started when Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton officials contacted the police about the child, Kylie Mickens, who had been taken to the hospital by her parents for treatment.
5-year-old Kylie, who weighed only3kg (7lbs) and was unresponsive, was airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Scottish Rite Hospital.
Because of the girl’s alarming weight and health condition, police alerted the Sheriff’s Office investigators and Hall County Division of Family and Children Services.
The next day, Kylie had passed away and the Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation, which included an autopsy, execution of a search warrant at the parents’ home, and interviews.
An autopsy by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that the cause of death was malnutrition and dehydration, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Days after the child’s tragic death, her grandmother wrote on Facebook that Kylie was born with ‘a rare condition’ and was only expected to live for two years.
Her post added: “However we experienced a true miracle and were able to enjoy 5 years with her.”
Both Porscha and Jerrail Mickens remained in custody without bond.
One person commented: “Seems like the parents ate just fine. Such a horrendous death for that little girl. Evil of the parents.”
Another wrote: “Why didnt family or friends do anything for this little girl. My heart breaks for that little girl.”
