A couple has been arrested after their romantic marriage proposal at a shopping mall in Iran because it was deemed offensive to Islam.
The incident was caught on camera and shared on social media.
The video, which showed the sweet moment a young man put a ring on her girlfriend’s finger at a shopping mall in Arak, Tehran, Iran, was condemned by Iranian authorities because it contradicted the country’s Islamic doctrines.
During the footage, the man stood inside a ring of petals shaped like a heart. His girlfriend looked at him and gasped with excitement.
She stood next to white and red balloons laid out on the floor and said her sweet ‘yes’ to his marriage proposal. Her very happy boyfriend slipped the ring onto her finger.
The couple hugged each other tightly as people around them clapped and cheered. Their video was then shared online and quickly went viral.
The two were later arrested for breaking the laws on public decency but they have been released on bail.
Arak deputy police chief Mostafa Norouzi told the Shahrvand daily that their “offense is very clear and there is no need for explanation.”
He also said that it was unacceptable for the couple “to do whatever is common in other places of the world and disregard mores, culture and religion.”
According to the Islamic laws, women and men are forbidden from showing public displays of affection as the country deems it an influence of corrupt Western ideals. It also prohibits dancing and kissing in public.
This is not the first time people in Iran have been arrested for similar reasons. In 2018, Maedeh Hojabri caused outrage after sharing a video of herself dancing to music on Instagram.
After the girl’s arrest, women protested by recording videos of them dancing in public.
