Cheryl Fowler from North Carolina was bringing dinner to her husband when she heard faint cries.
“My husband was working late in his dump truck,” Cheryl explained. “I was coming to bring him his supper, and I heard a baby crying.”
Cheryl listened for some time that she became convinced it was a child crying. She even asked her daughter to listen to the sound to make sure.
“I just knew somebody somewhere hurt a baby in the woods,” she expressed. Her husband, Scott Fowler, believed his wife.
“My wife said, ‘We hear a baby crying,’ so I cut my truck off,” Scott said. “We first didn’t know if it was a crow or what, but then my daughter saw it.”
Near the bottom of the ravine was a baby’s child seat – and the baby girl. “She was wet, hungry, and cold. And banged up a little bit,” Scott recalled.
They went down the steep embankment and took the baby. “She quit crying immediately after he picked her up,” Cheryl said.
35-year-old Krista Noelle Madden, the mother of the 7-week-old baby, was charged with attempted first-degree murder.
According to Henderson County Sherriff’s Office, baby Shaylie did not suffer any serious injuries. The mother was charged after mobile phone triangulation revealed she had been in the area when the baby was thrown off.
Krista is being held in the local county jail with a bond set at $750,000.
“This was, simply, in my opinion, by the grace of a merciful God, that we had a female that goes to check her mailbox,” said Sheriff Lowell Griffin.
