A couple, who spent 60 years together, has passed away of coronavirus just hours apart.
Bryn and Pat Howells, from the Rhondda Valley in Wales, were in isolation for four weeks. Despite this, the couple contracted coronavirus in April.
80-year-old Pat became ill on April 4 and 86-year-old Bryn started showing the same symptoms shortly after Pat became ill.
The couple was tested positive for coronavirus after they were admitted to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, South Wales.
The couple, who were married for 60 years, were on ventilators in the same hospital ward and died on Monday just 17 hours apart.
Their family is left heartbroken but they say they are taking some comfort in the fact they died together after spending 60 years together.
Their grandson Elliot told WalesOnline that he spoke to them just over a week ago and they were absolutely fine.
He told WalesOnline: “Nanny, especially, was so well. We always said she was a very young 80-year-old, and she had decades left in her.”
“It is just horrific and such a shock. Just over a week ago, I spoke to her and she was pressure washing her garden and painting her hallway.”
Five months ago, the Queen sent a card to Mr. and Mrs. Howells for congratulating them on their Diamond wedding anniversary.
Pat used to work as a lunchtime supervisor at Gelli Primary School while Bryn worked as a financial advisor for Legal & General.
The couple has left behind four sons, 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Elliot said it was heartbreaking that they were not allowed to visit them and couldn’t say a final goodbye.
He thanked the medical staff for the care they gave to his beloved grandparents.
He described the couple as “pillars of the community” who were so full of love and took pride in their family.
