An elderly couple was pictured holding hands in their final moments days before they both succumbed to COVID-19.
Blanche Johnson and Eddie Johnson Jr. were an Atlanta-based couple who died days apart after contracting the novel coronavirus.
While Mr. Johnson passed away on April 5, his wife followed him on April 8.
“They were struggling. They both developed pneumonia. They both had that cough and could hardly breathe and they talked about the pain,” Jennifer McWhorter, the couple’s daughter, said in an interview with FOX 5.
In the loving memory of her parents, Jennifer has also shared a picture of the senior couple holding hands during their final moments together.
As the daughter told the outlet, she quarantined herself after being exposed to the virus when she picked her dad up in order to get him to the hospital.
According to McWhorter, she also felt angry about the lack of response from the retirement community where her parents were staying – the Arbor Terrace at Cascade.
“No one called. Until I had to call them and tell them, ‘you ought to be ashamed of yourself.’ All of sudden, I’ve gotten two or three calls today,” she added.
According to FOX 5, officials have confirmed that 48 out of 61 Arbor Terrace residents were diagnosed with COVID-19.
While McWhorter expressed she believes a lack of PPE and proper care could be the cause of the outbreak at the retirement home, the center insisted they have taken “all the appropriate measures.”
“We have maintained communication with our local health department and they assure us we are taking all the appropriate measures,” the center’s officials told FOX 5.
“We also have supplies of protective equipment, which includes masks, goggles and gloves. We will continue to monitor our supplies and stay in communication with our suppliers and staff to meet their needs.”
