Irma is a two-year-old puma whom they call their pet. They adopted Irma from a zoo the previous year when they heard that the zoo could not afford to keep her and hence were planning to put her down.
That time, Irma was merely seven months old. But in spite of the tenderness of her age, Irma did not allow the couple to touch her. According to Sergey, Irma was probably very suspicious of them and did not find them trustworthy.
With time and lots of love, Irma finally opened up to them and allowed them to touch her. It took months for this to happen. Irma eventually came around to trusting them and also love them back.
Marina said that she got a lot of scratches and bites and her colleagues would joke if her husband were beating her. She knew better and told them that it was just her ‘kitty.’
After having her around for more than a year, Sergey says that it is probably now that Irma trusts them completely. They even have regular cuddles with Irma, who is now almost 38 kg. They also sometimes sleep next to her.
The couple spends over $1000 on her food each month. They have tried to maintain her natural diet, which consists of goats, deer, rabbits, and moose. Irma is a ‘picky’ puma as she only likes fresh farm bred animals’ meat.
In Russia, it is legal to own mountain lion. However, the introduction of a new law will prohibit people from keeping cats that weigh over 20 kg. This law, however, will not be affecting the existing owners of such animals. Sergey, who is an attorney, has made sure of it.
