From money to glass sets to home appliances, there are plenty of gift ideas that you might consider when planning to attend a wedding.
While most of us struggle to come up with something unique, one aunt provided her niece with what could be the most useful wedding gift anyone got so far.
When Kathy and Brandon Gunn received a gift from their auntie they didn’t expect that she would order them not to open it until their “first disagreement.”
Respecting their aunt’s wishes, the couple kept the gift for nine years without opening it. While they sure were tempted, they knew that the woman who’s been happily married for half a century knew what she was doing when she gave them the instructions.
The aunt’s gift came in a box together with an envelope that read: “Do not open until first disagreement.” Upon handing over the gift, the aunt also made the couple promise they wouldn’t open it in advance.
While the couple had plenty of fights over the period of nine years, they never opened the package because they didn’t want to feel like their marriage was falling apart.
“There had obviously been plenty of disagreements, arguments and slammed doors throughout our 9 years. There were even a couple of instances where we both considered giving up… but we never opened the box,” Kathy explained in a Facebook post.
“I honestly think that we both avoided turning to the box, because it would have symbolized our failure. To us, it would have meant that we didn’t have what it takes to make our marriage work – and we’re both too stubborn and determined for that.
“So, it forced us to reassess situations. Was it really time to open the box? What if this isn’t our worst fight? What if there’s a worse one ahead of us and we don’t have our box?!? As my Great Uncle Bill would say, ‘Nothing is ever so bad that it couldn’t get worse.’”
One night, however, everything changed. After putting their kids to sleep, Brandon and Kathy talked about an upcoming wedding and discussed what gift they should get. At that moment, the pair remembered the ever-lasting impact their aunt’s gift left on them.
Despite not having any marital problems at that moment, the couple decided to open the gift and see what was inside all that time.
In the box, there were two notes; one was addressed to Kathy and the other one to Brandon.
Kathy’s note read: “Go get a pizza, shrimp or something you both like”
Brandon’s note read: “Go get flowers and a bottle of wine”
In the box, there were also wine glasses, a flower vase, lotion, bath soap, and other useful things for overcoming an argument.
“All along, we assumed that the contents of that box held the key to saving a marriage – an age-old trick – unbeknownst to us rookies,” Kathy shared after opening the box.
“After all, my Great Aunt and Uncle had been married for nearly half a century. So, we thought the box would save ‘us’ – and in a way it did.”
