Couple Tied The Knot In The ICU So The Bride’s Father Could ‘See His Baby Girl Get Married’

A couple decided to tie the knot in the ICU at St Vincent Hospital in Evansville so the bride’s father could see his daughter getting married.

Shelby Schweikhart and Jared Conville, from Evansville, got engaged last year and planned to get married on October 3, 2020.

However, Shelby’s father, Steven’s testicular cancer returned after he contracted pneumonia. It had spread to his lungs and doctors told them it was terminal.

The couple then decided to get married 10 months early and said ‘I do’ in front of the bride’s father who was in the ICU at St Vincent Hospital in Evansville.

Shelby told WTHR: “A couple [of] friends went to the bridal store because my wedding dress wasn’t going to be be here until February. They picked out a dress for me and a veil. I just threw it on and off we went to his ICU room.”

The video of the five-minute ceremony was posted on Facebook with the caption: ‘It was the most beautiful, bittersweet moment of my life. My dad got to see his baby girl get married, and it meant the world to me that he was able to see it.’

The video instantly went viral online, leaving people in tears.

Shelby later said she was shocked to see the overwhelming response they received online.

She said: “I didn’t expect it to go viral. I just posted it on there for our family and friends to see. Because he was in the ICU for six days and on a ventilator, I didn’t have time to contact anyone or really talk to anybody.”

“So I posted it on Facebook to kind of update everyone. And that’s when everyone messaged me about the video and asked to share it.”

Shelby’s father has been discharged from the hospital after he insisted to stop life support. Currently, he is at his home in hospice care.
