Two young girls, 6-year-old cousins who family members described as ‘best friends’ and ‘inseparable,’ were killed after a 32-year-old man in stolen police car crashed into their minivan.
A press conference was held by Dayton Police about the incident.
According to investigators, Eleanor McBride and Penelope Jasko died in the crash only moments after Penelope’s mom picked them up after their team’s first soccer game.
Mellisa Jasko, Penelope’s mom, was at the wheel of their vehicle with six of her kids and one of her sister’s children seated behind her.
She was pulling away from the curb outside a library when a stolen police car ran a red light and crashed into their minivan and another vehicle.
There were 10 injuries from the incident and two fatalities, Dayton Police said.
Walters, 32, allegedly stabbed his father and crashed their pickup truck. He then allegedly stole a police car from Riverside.
The girls’ step-grandfather, Ted Blackshear, told the Dayton Daily News that the two are ‘best friends.’
“They were born nearly together, they did most everything together, and they left together,” he expressed.
A GoFundMe page was set up for the children’s funerals. It wrote that the girls “have always been inseparable and are now in the joy of heaven, together as always.”
“While the family grieves for this loss of life and light, two of their children continue to recover at the hospital. No amount of money can return those sweet girls to life. What is needed most is prayers for the healing of bodies and souls.”
Walters, who already has a long criminal history including arrests for assault, menacing and robbery, was released from jail earlier this month.
