5 coronavirus patients on intensive care units have been killed in one of the St.
Petersburg hospital fire. The fire reportedly started due to a short-circuit in one of the ventilators and 150 individuals were evacuated from St. George City Hospital on 12th May.
One source noted that ventilators have a certain limit and as per the preliminary data, the machine ignited due to an overload, which caused the fire.
The 5 victims who died were probably connected to the ventilators at that time. Smoke was pouring from the hospital’s window. The hospital had been recategorized to cope with COVID-19 patients during the pandemic.
The fire has reportedly destroyed 108 sq. ft. inside the building. The blaze broke out on the sixth floor and 11 people were rescued and then taken to the hospital’s lower floor.
However, the number of people who have been injured due to the fire remains unknown. Later, the emergency services noted that the fire had been contained.
This comes after one elderly woman lost her life after a fire broke in one of the Moscow hospitals treating patients affected by coronavirus on Saturday.
The fire was caused when an oxygen balloon supplying the ventilator exploded leading to a major fire. 295 patients had to be evacuated at that time.
Now, the authorities are examining causes of both of the fires. The number of coronavirus cases in Russia increased by 11,656 as of 11th May, a record daily increase. This brings the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 221,344.
Coronavirus is said to have been emerged in China’s Wuhan in late 2019, and since then, it was affected more than 200 countries and 4,275,000 people in the world.
