Crows have long been known as smart birds but it appears they can be quite the bully, as well.
One crow in Sheffield, UK, has achieved local notoriety for attacking people unprovoked. The bird, named Russel, claims Brincliffe Edge Wood as his stomping ground and has already claimed several victims.
His signature move is a dive bomb from above (which lets him attack with the least chance of detection) and then smacking his victim on the head. It has come to the point that his victims have taken to Facebook to compare notes.
One woman even claimed that she had been the subject of Russell’s attention four separate times now. And one guy even got a nasty gash on his head during one such attack.
The man, Sam Howard, said he had been walking through the woods accompanied by his girlfriend and was minding his own business when the attack just came out of nowhere.
Talking to the Sheffield Star, he said: “Everything seemed normal, nothing amiss. Then the next thing I know I get walloped on the back of the head by what felt like a sack of spuds.
“My girlfriend screamed, I was shocked. We saw a black shadow flying away and assumed it was a one-off freak accident by a rogue crow.
“As we warned another passer-by about the incident, she mentioned the Facebook post.
“Turns out Russell has been terrorizing the neighborhood for the last few days.”
Fortunately for Sam, the wound wasn’t so bad and the bleeding quickly stopped. But thing could have been so much worse.
A woman named Zara Maun also recounted that her wife had been assaulted by the bird while they were walking their dogs through the area. Russell appeared to show no remorse and even stared at them afterward.
She told the media outlet: “My wife Lindsey and I are dog walkers from Dog and Bone Club.
“We were walking a small group of three dogs in the top end of the woods when the angry bird took a swoop with their beak at my wife’s head.
“The bird didn’t touch me but one of the dogs we were with, a Bull Greyhound Joey, barked at it for a while and it wasn’t fazed at all, it just sat in the tree staring at us.”
One woman who wished to remain anonymous said she has given up going through the woodland area altogether.
While an understandable response, it really looks odd that a crow would manage to chase humans out of the area rather than the other way around.
