A young girl was beaten to death for something she could not control.
In June 2018, 3-year-old Ana Livia Lopes da Silva had been a victim of physical abuse by her stepfather for wetting the bed. This had happened more than once, the last beating caused her to go into a suspected seizure, falling to her death.
Her body was adjusting rapidly, reacting to the wounds and pain through anguish and despair of Ana’s pleads to her mother. When at her mother’s house, the court states that she had not budged, even while she heard Ana complain.
Ana had spent the day with her mother the day after the beating, even under immense pain, the mother still hesitated to help her, says Contilnet noticias.
It started to become severe when she had been found by her aunt and grandmother, the family’s neighbors.
Ana was brought to the hospital when she was found unconscious, along with bruises that started to swell up on her body.
After finding her in this state, they rushed her to Margarita Moralles hospital, relatively close to their home.
Despite the aunt and grandmother’s quick response and efforts for the young girl, Ana could not be treated successfully, having to transfer to Santa Casa de Pocos de Caldas. When proclaimed dead, her stepfather and mother had been arrested on the spot.
Ana died in the second hospital and in her trial, the prosecutor states: “She arrived in a very serious condition… the mother spent the whole day watching her daughter’s suffering.”
The victim’s stepfather, Christopher Anthony Tavares Coelho, 27, had been sentenced to 32 years and one month in jail for homicide.
Fellow girlfriend, Leticia Lopes Fonseca, 19, had been charged to 29 years, two months, and 23 days since she had failed to help her daughter. Even after hearing her please, Leticia did not budge, leading to the young girl’s death.
