Time often flies in a day crammed with all the minutiae of living.
From rushing to the office, eating lunch at the diner, and wearily trooping back home at the end of the day. And in all that time, it’s easy to go on autopilot for most of the time because all you’re thinking about is how you want the day to already be over.
However, as an old saying goes, sometimes one just simply needs to stop a stare at the flowers. And in those times, it’s possible to find little miracles that will totally change one’s outlook in life.
And for a young woman named Casey Fischer, it wasn’t a flower she saw one day but the miracle that followed was just as sublime.
Fischer was buying a meal at a Dunkin’ Donuts when she noticed a homeless man picking up some change at the side of the road. When he entered the establishment, he started counting his money.
At first, he was annoyed when she started talking to him. But when she noticed that he only had $1 on hand, she decided to treat him to a bagel and coffee.
In return, she asked the man to join her at a table and he obliged.
In the course of her conversation with him, she found out that his name was Chris. He recalled how he often faced cruelty from other people “because he was homeless.”
He also admitted that drugs had “turned him into the person he hated.” His mother had passed away due to cancer but even after her death, he kept alive a desire to become a “person she could be proud of.”
Well over an hour had passed before Fischer realized that she needed to return to class. But before she left, he told her to wait.
Chris handed her a note that he had written on a crumpled up receipt, apologizing for his “shaky handwriting,” as he smiled and walked away.
As soon as Fischer read the note, she realized that something bigger had happened than a simple conversation over free coffee and bagel.
The note read: “I wanted to kill myself today…because of u I now do not. Thank u, beautiful person.”
Those were simple words but ones that carried so much meaning. It’s a lesson that the simplest gestures, even ones that we may not even be thinking of, can make the biggest difference for someone. This applies to both positive and negative actions which are why it’s important to be more conscious of what we do and how we interact with others.
Let’s all be that beautiful person!
