The heartbreaking incident took place in the municipality of Valasaravakkam, Chennai District, in southern India’s Tamil Nadu state. One onlooker captured the heart-wrenching footage of the baby being rescued by the woman.
At first, Geeta though that the baby was actually a crying kitten stranded inside the underground drain. He was rushed to the nearby Egmore Hospital where the doctors diagnosed him with a breathing problem.
The doctors treated the baby, and now he has been recovered from his health and the incident.
Geeta, who lives with her daughter, said that she wants to name the baby boy Suthanthiram (freedom), as he was found on India’s 72nd Independence Day.
She said that she reacted immediately upon getting suspicious about the cries. She said that it was painful to see someone abandoning a baby like this. Someone pushed the baby deep inside the underground drain so that he could not be easily spotted and wrapped the umbilical cord around his neck so that it would slowly kill him, she added.
The baby will remain under the care of the hospital before being transferred to a local orphanage.
