Most animals have a certain level of curiosity but cows are naturally more curious than most. If there’s something new in their surroundings, you can be sure that at least one cow will be there to sniff it out. Newborn calves are even more curious than their elders and will be more likely to come close and investigate. And that’s exactly what happened on a farm near Millbrook, Ontario.
Glenda the calf was only a few days old at the time the clip was taken and the world must have been a totally new experience for her at that time. It was a beautiful spring day in May and Glenda’s herd is allowed to freely wander this vast farmland composed of pastures and meadows. If ever there was an idyllic setting for a painting or a movie, this would be one with rolling hills of lush, green grass.
Not only that, the land is filled with ponds of fresh water that the cows can drink from while surrounded by forest that gives wonderful shade from the hot sun.point 237 |
The farmers in this area actually treat their cows more like pets than farm animals.point 70 | Among them is Gus, a large and friendly bull who loves to get his head scratched and will even eat out of your hand, much like a dog.point 176 | The overall intention of the farm is for the animals to live as close to their natural environment as possible.point 268 | 1
That spring, 25 calves were born and one of them was Glenda. Like the young of most animals, these calves spend most of the day drinking milk from their mothers or exploring the area while the rest of the herd keeps a close watch.
Glenda can be seen inching closer to the camera, not sure what it is while the other cow, who seem to be babysitting the other calves, calmly watch on. Finally, curiosity gets the better of her and Glenda steps up close and even nudges the camera for a bit, all while sniffing at the strange object.
Watching a beautiful scene like this is almost enough to convince one to give up eating meat entirely even if one wasn’t aware of all the benefits of going vegan or following a vegetarian lifestyle. Of course, not everyone can go totally meatless but it would certainly help if people bought from ethical farms such as this one.
This particular farm refuses to make feel and the animals are well-treated and fed properly. While this means their products will cost more than what you would find in the supermarket, it’s certainly well worth avoiding the cruelty and abysmal conditions animals endure in commercialized farming operations.
Unfortunately, the constant demand for low prices forces a lot of farmers to cut costs even at the expense of the welfare of the animals they are raising.
