About 20 militant vegans protesting outside a butcher’s shop have been pelted with steaks and other meats by the owner’s customers.
Members of the Direct Action Everywhere animal rights group stood outside celebrity chef Vince Garreffa’s store.
A group of 300 meat lovers paraded cuts of meat in the street and played Italian music in response.
Despite the hot temperatures, the shop’s supporters fought back and one man even threw a steak at the protesters.
According to Daily Mail Australia, a witness said that one pro-meat waved a steak in front of a vegan militant’s face before throwing it towards them.
“(The vegans) were definitely frustrated. I think they were taken aback by the number of supporters. They were just fuming. Everyone was there to support them.”
One of the protesters shouted over a megaphone: “Stop the killing! Stop the violence! Fight with us!”
Using a megaphone and waving placards as they gathered in front of the shop, the vegans chanted: “It’s not food, it’s murder.”
The witness added: “All the butchers started parading meat, carrying four or five lambs over their shoulders.”
Butcher supporters also mentioned the hypocrisy of some vegans wearing leather shoes and bags.
Chef Vince Garreffa said to Daily Mail Australia: “I couldn’t believe they would waste so much time attacking individual farmers and butcher shops.
“I couldn’t believe the amount of farmers, butchers, and members of local council who came to support us. It was so humbling that I got emotional a few times.”
The butcher said that he even offered the protesters water because of the scorching heat. “They’re an arrogant bunch. They don’t represent all vegans. These people have no respect they called us some vile names.
“They’re very rude and very spoilt.”
