Bumblebees are very important pollinators.

They do not produce as much honey as honeybees, but without these adorable and hardworking creatures, food would not grow.

Two-thirds of the world’s crop species depend on pollinators, including butterflies, bats, and birds. But bees are the most important creatures in most ecosystems, said ecologist Rachel Winfree in a 2009 article in National Wildlife magazine.

Bumblebees are colored with orange, yellow and black, and their wings can be seen in darkish hues. The queen can survive for a year while other members live for only several months.

According to the Integrated Taxonomic Information, there are more than 225 species of bumblebees, so these tiny creatures with cute bums can have many sizes!

The biggest is the queen of the Bombus dahlbomii, which can grow up to four centimeters (1.6 inches) long.

It is not surprising that these hardworking creatures are found in different parts of the world as there are so many species. The biggest bumblebee is found in Chile and Argentina while the rusty patched bumblebee is found in Canada and the US.

Bumblebees eat pollen and nectar. The pollen gives them protein while the sugary nectar provides them with energy, according to The Bumblebee Conservation Trust. They produce honey by chewing the pollen and mixing it with their saliva.

While collecting nectar, they thrust their bums in the air, showing it off! Their bums are so cute that people can’t seem to get enough of it.

A third said: “One day I just realized, as long as you are really, really gentle and don’t intrude on honey bees’ business, they will let you sit closely as they pollinate flowers. It’s lowkey so relaxing.”
