A cutlery company creates knives with rounded and square tips as a response to the increasing number of knife crime.
According to a report in October last year, authorities have recorded over 44,000 incidents involving a sharp object or knife from the beginning of the year until June, showing a 7 percent increase on the same period in 2018.
The Office for National Statistics stated that the alarming number of knife crimes was the highest it had been since 2010.
That’s why Viners, a cutlery and kitchenware company, has made a new set of knives that have square and rounded tips instead of a piercing point.
The rounded knives have all been “repeatedly tested to ensure the tip does not pierce skin intentionally or otherwise.”
“With knife-related crime incidents at a record high and a reported 285 fatalities in the last 12 months alone, the UK government has taken the decision to reclassify kitchen knives as an offensive weapon with the new Offensive Weapons Act 2019, leading some retailers to remove single knives from sale in retail stores,” Viners said in a press release.
“The new Assure collection from Viners has been created in response to this new legislation, with the team extensively testing a new shape knife that is highly functional for the modern cook but shaped to reduce and prevent injuries, accidents and fatalities.”
A set of four knives with rounded tips cost $20.79 and will be available to purchase from homeware retailer Dunelm. It will also soon be available on the official website.
Viners has also stated that the knives have the ‘same functionality as a standard knife’ when cutting up food and cooking but ‘helping to reduce unnecessary accidents when preparing food and washing up.’
