A dog was dubbed the cyclops puppy after being born with just one eye due to a rare congenital condition.
Kevin the one-eyed-dog was born in Chachoengsao, Thailand, where stunned locals believe him to be a lucky charm due to his unique looks.
Following days after Kevin’s birth, the vet ran a thorough examination and determined that the pup is in optimal condition. Sadly, however, they have also warned that the rare condition will likely cause the pup to have a short life.
“Cyclopia is a very rare congenital issue where the fetus fails to develop two separate orbital spaces (the cavities in which eyeballs sit). It is a form of what is known medically as holoprosencephaly,” James Portsmouth of Animal Trust explained in an interview with UNILAD.
“Animals born with cyclopia often also have abnormal lips, noses and nasal spaces. Sadly, it is rare for these animals to survive very long after birth as the brain is also usually affected.”
As for the pup’s owner, Somjai Phummaman, he first noticed that something was off with the Aspin dog after spotting his head among other puppies in the litter.
“We are wishing that the puppy survives, even though it has a deformity. We want to keep him as a pet until he grows up,” he said.
“Everybody has been amazed by him and saying that it is lucky sign. People said that he looks like the yellow cartoon character with one eye [Kevin the Minion], so we can nicknamed him after that.”
