An entire elementary school in Maine learned sign language to welcome their first ever deaf student.
The students and staff at the Dayton Consolidated School in Maine learned sign language for a deaf student and called a Cinderella character actor to sing with ASL to welcome six-year-old Morey Belanger.
When they came to know Morie could only communicate in ASL, they started learning sign language. Most of the students have already learned at least 20 words to communicate with Morey.
The school Principal Kimberly Sampietro told CNN: ”Morey – without even knowing it – has taught us so much. She has brought culture to our building that we didn’t have before.”
“The kids have just really embraced her. They look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her.”
The Principal added: “We wanted to show our students that this isn’t something they can only speak with Morey. We wanted to show them that signing happens in all kinds of settings.”
The school also invited a Cinderella character actor to sing with ASL at Wednesday’s princess party.
Morey, who was dressed as Belle from Beauty And The Beast, was delighted after Cinderella started using sign language when she was singing.
Morey’s mom Shannon Belanger told CNN: “I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed. I think all the kids feel excited that they know another language and I think they think it’s fun.”
Morey is the first ever deaf student at the Dayton Consolidated School in Maine.
