When people think about tender moments between a parent and infant, the first thing most people picture is that of a mother cradling her baby.
While that’s a valid image, it’s also a bit unfair to the father because he also plays an equally important role in a child’s development.

In fact, there are studies show that a father’s rejection and abandonment of a family are even more devastating compared to a mother’s rejection and abandonment. This is because fathers are seen as the authority figure so any rejection from such a figure carries even more psychological weight.
Just think back to the time when you were much younger. For girls, who was it who took you to the prom and made sure your very first boyfriend (or every boyfriend thereafter) stayed in line or there would be hell to pay? And for boys, who was it who threw the ball at you during the evening or weekends as you learned the ropes in baseball?
These moments create a special bond with the father and also leave the child with a feeling of accomplishment and pride especially if the dad gives out encouraging words and is very supportive.
But it’s not just in those big activities that dads make their impact in our lives. Even quiet and tender moments are just as important as can be seen in this video.
We can see a two-week-old baby nestled between his dad and the guitar and while contentedly leaning his head on his dad’s guitar, he just listens as his dad strums out some relaxing music on his guitar. Rather than be agitated at the sounds the guitar is making, the baby looks like he’s getting even more relaxed and even closes his eyes several times.
Happy at his very appreciative audience, the dad continues what he’s doing and besides, it’s still good listening for adults!
It’s good that the technology exists now to capture these precious moments for posterity. A few decades ago, this would most likely have been photographed only as video equipment was more clunky at the time.
The ease by which we can capture video nowadays can ensure that these spontaneous events are not lost to history and can be something that both parents and children can look back on when they’re much older.
